National Compliment Day

Today (January 24th) is National Compliment Day. Complimenting people does not just benefit them, statistically it benefits the person dishing out the compliment as well. Have you ever had a day that was just not going the way you wished, and out of no where someone said something so nice to you out of the blue? Do you remember how quickly it changed your mood? So why should you spend (or "waste" your time as some would say) complimenting others? Well there are plenty of reasons, but here is just a couple.

Complimenting those you love is easy, but what about those whom you do not know or know very well. Believe it or not, this sparks creativity. Finding something to say to someone once a day can take your mind off any major focus (good or bad) you have and get other parts of your brain active. You never know how that can hep you solve a problem, issue, or funk of your own. Or, even better, maybe one of theirs too!

Another possible outcome, genuine compliments build trust. Why not build a better relationship with coworkers or acquaintances? How do you feel when you genuinely tell someone something nice? Kinda good right?!? I remember when I went out to dinner on Christmas Eve this past year and saw this lady who was probably my grandma's age sitting a couple tables away. She had on a super cute sparkly top and I could tell she got all done up for a holiday meal with her family. As I was passing by her table to leave, I leaned over and quietly told her how lovely her top was. My, did she light up! She was so happy and thanked me for stopping to say that and I, in return, felt joy too. There was no reason for me to stop and tell her. I could have thought it as I walked by and said nothing, but I would not have such a sweet memory of making a lady smile by a random stranger.

So here's my challenge for you today. Try to give out 5 compliments to different people and see how it makes you feel. I'm pretty sure you will feel your heart warm, even if it is just a little (this is a good way to tell how big your heart is... just saying). So go spread some joy!! Besides, compliments are free!!!! No need to be a billionaire to change the world. Just a few sweet words from the heart,
